After 11 years as an online bookseller of very fine collectible literature , one thing has remained constant: When it comes to signed books, the autograph authenticity and originality is just as important as the condition. It is not a mystery that a genuine King autograph can add hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to a first edition collectible book.

So how do you know it's real?

One simple way is to make sure that it is "period correct", by comparing it to known genuine examples from the same time period.

As King's signature  has changed over time,  one from 1980 may look entirely different as compared to one from 2015. So that's why we put together this handy autograph reference chart that displays King's autograph over the years and decades.

This is particularly helpful for "flat-signed" books without any inscription and that are not signed limited editions.

How is this information useful? For example, if you find an autograph in a book published after 2000, and it resembles one indicative of the 1980s,. then this is a tell-tale indication that it might be forged, and it should be highly suspect.

By the way, you never have to question the signature authenticity of a publisher issued signed limited, or signed lettered edition. Unless otherwise noted as a "facsimile" autograph (yes, some publishers produce these - not sure why though) , rest assured that they are real.
